Shekel

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

(D.V., sicle; Hebrew: sheqel, to weigh)

An ancient unit of weight of the Babylonians, Phoenicians, and Hebrews, equal to one sixtieth of a pound. It was also the name of the chief silver coin of the Hebrews, and is mentioned in the Bible (Genesis 24; Exodus 30; 2 Kings 14).
