1910 New Catholic Dictionary

An animal resembling a jackal, mentioned in the Bible (Isaiah 13); the passage indicates an animal dwelling in ruins. A verbal resemblance only should be sought between this and the fabulous being, famous for its allure, called siren by the ancient poets and writers.
