William Bouguereau

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

French academic painter; born La Rochelle, France, November 30, 1825; died Paris, France, August 19, 1905. The winner of the Grand Prix de Rome, 1850, he studied four years in Rome, painting there the canvas now in the Luxembourg, "The Body of Saint Cecilia borne to the Catacombs." His religious pictures are admired for their sentiment and harmonious color. One of the best known is the "Vierge Consolatrice" of the Louvre.
