Asshur
Holman Bible Dictionary
(ass' sshuhr) ASSHURIM, ASSHURITES (NIV) Personal and national name. 1. Son of Shem and thus a Semite, as were the Hebrew people (Genesis 10:22 ). 2 . An otherwise unknown Arabian tribe (Genesis 25:3 ). This tribe may also be meant in Balaam's oracle (Numbers 24:22-24 ), but a reference to Assyria is more likely. 3. The nation Assyria and its inhabitants are generally meant by the Hebrew term Asshur . This is the likely meaning in Genesis 10:11; Ezekiel 27:23; Ezekiel 32:22; Hosea 14:3 . See Assyria.
