Holman Bible Dictionary

(ay' vuh) or AVVA A people the Assyrians conquered and settled in Israel to replace the people they took into Exile (2 Kings 17:24 ). Their gods did not help them against the Assyrians and could be used as an example to call Jerusalem to surrender (2 Kings 18:34 , where Ivvah refers to the same people). Compare 2 Kings 19:13 . Avva was apparently in Syria, but their homeland is unknown. Some would suggest tell Kafr Ayah on the Orontes River. The Avites who made the god Nibhaz (2 Kings 17:31 ) may refer to these people.
