Translation of a Hebrew word that literally means “one who gives drink.” The butler was an officer of the royal court who had charge of wines and other beverages. The butler was a trusted member of the royal court as this person helped prevent the poisoning of the king. The term that is translated “butler” (Genesis 40:1-23; Genesis 41:9 ) is also translated “cupbearer” (1 Kings 10:5; 2 Chronicles 9:4; Nehemiah 1:11 ).
