Holman Bible Dictionary

The English translation of at least eight different Hebrew terms for materials interlaced together into ornamental or restraining objects. 1. An ornament worn around the neck either signifying investiture in office with political award (Genesis 41:42; Daniel 5:7 ) or for personal jewelry (Numbers 31:50 ). Animals such as camels might also wear ornamental chains (Judges 8:26 ). 2 . Decorations of gold worn on the high priest's breastplate (Exodus 28:14 ). 3 . A series of chains formed a partition in Solomon's Temple (1 Kings 6:21 ). 4 . Architectural ornaments on the Temple walls (2Chronicles 3:5,2 Chronicles 3:16 ). 5 . Restraining chains preventing prisoners from escaping (Jeremiah 39:7; Acts 28:20 ). God could loose His minister from chains (Acts 12:7 ).
