Holman Bible Dictionary

(day' than) Personal name meaning, “fountain” or “warring.” The son of Eliab and brother from the tribe of a Reuben, Dathan and his brother Abiram were leaders of a revolt challenging Moses' authority over the Israelites. The attempted coup failed, and Dathan and Abiram, along with their families, were swallowed up by the earth (Numbers 16:1 ). See Numbers; Abiram .
