Holman Bible Dictionary

(ih li' ab) Personal name meaning, “God is father.” 1. Leader of tribe of Zebulun under Moses (Numbers 1:9 ). He brought the tribe's offering at the dedication of the altar (Numbers 7:24 ). 2 . Member of tribe of Reuben and father of Dathan and Abiram. See 1 Samuel 16:6 ). He fought in Saul's army (1 Samuel 17:13 ) and became angry at David's interest in fighting Goliath (1 Samuel 17:28 ). His daughter married King Rehoboam (2 Chronicles 11:18 ). He is apparently called Elihu in 1 Chronicles 27:18 . 4 . A Levite in the line of Kohath and ancestor of Samuel (1 Chronicles 6:27 ). The same person is apparently called Elihu in 1 Samuel 1:1 and Eliel ( 1 Chronicles 6:34 ). 5 . A Levite appointed as a Temple musician under David (1Chronicles 15:18,1 Chronicles 15:20; 1 Chronicles 16:5 ). 6 . A military leader from the tribe of Gad under David (1 Chronicles 12:9 ).
