Elnathan

Holman Bible Dictionary

(ehl na' am) Personal name meaning, “God has given.” 1. Father of King Jehoiachin's mother (2 Kings 24:8 ). 2 . Possibly to be identified with 1. He was the member of King Jehoiakim's advisory staff who brought the prophet Uriah back to the king from Egypt for punishment (Jeremiah 26:22-23 ). He tried to prevent the king from burning Baruch's scroll of Jeremiah's preaching (Jeremiah 36:12-26 ). 2 . Three men of the same name plus a “Nathan” are listed in Ezra 8:16 as part of the delegation Ezra sent to search for Levites to return from Babylon to Jerusalem with him. Many Bible students feel that copying of the manuscripts has introduced extra names into the list.
