Gilboa
Holman Bible Dictionary
(gihl boh' uh) Place name of uncertain meaning, perhaps, “hill country” or “bubbling fountain.” Location of an Israelite encampment (1 Samuel 28:4 ). The Israelites under Saul were preparing to do battle against the Philistines. At Mount Gilboa Saul and his three sons were slain (1 Samuel 31:8 ). David sang a lament over the Gilboa tragedy (2 Samuel 1:17-27 ). Mount Gilboa has been identified with modern Jebel Fuqus, on the eastern side of the Plain of Esdraelon. See Palestine; Saul .
