Holman Bible Dictionary
KJV term for a husband or for the head of a household. At Proverbs 7:19 goodman renders the Hebrew ish , the usual word for man. KJV on occasion translates the Greek term oikodehyspotes (rendered “goodman” at Matthew 20:11; Matthew 24:43; Mark 14:14; Luke 22:11 ) as master of the house (Matthew 10:25 ) or householder (Matthew 13:27 ). Modern translations use equivalents such as landowner or owner of the house.
