Holman Bible Dictionary
(hay' sshuhm) 1. Personal name meaning, “flat-nosed.” Clan leader of group returning from Babylonian Exile with Zerubbabel about 537 B.C. Some clan members divorced their foreign wives under Ezra's leadership to rid the community of religious temptations (Ezra 10:33 ). 2 . Community leader who stood with Ezra while he read the law to the people (Nehemiah 8:4 ). He also signed Nehemiah's covenant to obey God (Nehemiah 10:18 ).
