Herd

Holman Bible Dictionary

A number of animals kept together under human control. In biblical usage herd generally refers to cattle in contrast to flock which refers to sheep or goats. Herds were a source of meat and dairy products, of agricultural labor (1 Chronicles 12:40; Isaiah 46:1 ), and of sacrifices (Numbers 7:3; Psalm 69:31; Isaiah 66:3 ). Herds were regarded as a sign of wealth (Genesis 13:5; Genesis 32:7; Genesis 45:10 ). Cattle were generally kept in open pasture. Pen-fed beef was a luxury item (Amos 6:4; Habakkuk 3:17 ). See Cattle .
