Igal

Holman Bible Dictionary

(i' gal) Personal name meaning, “he redeems.” 1. Spy representing tribe of Issachar whom Moses sent to investigate the land of Canaan (Numbers 13:7 ). He voted with the majority that the land was too difficult for Israel to conquer. 2. One of David's heroic warriors, apparently a foreigner from Zobah (2 Samuel 23:36 ), though his name is spelled Joel, and he is the brother, not son, of Nathan in 1 Chronicles 11:38 . 3 . Descendant of David in the postexilic community (about 470 B.C.) and thus bearer of the messianic line and hope (1 Chronicles 3:22 ), though the chronicler does not describe him in messianic terms here.
