Holman Bible Dictionary
(ihssh' i) Personal name meaning, “my deliverer or salvation.” 1. Descendant of Jerahmeel in tribe of Judah (1 Chronicles 2:31 ). 2 . Member of tribe of Judah (1 Chronicles 4:20 ). 3 . Father of military leaders of tribe of Simeon who successfully fought the Amalekites (1 Chronicles 4:42 ). 4 . Clan leader in tribe of Manasseh east of the Jordan (1 Chronicles 5:24 ). 5 . Transliteration of Hosea's wordplay between “my man” or “my husband” (Hebrew, ishi ) and “my master” or “my lord” (Hebrew, baali ) (Hosea 2:16 KJV, NAS). Hosea looked to the day when Israel would quit worshiping or even pronouncing the name of Baal and would be totally faithful to Yahweh as “her man” and “her master.”
