(jih hi' ehl) Personal name meaning, “Let him live, O God.” 1. Apparently a variant name for Jehiah (1 Chronicles 15:18; compare 1 Chronicles 15:24 ). See 1 Chronicles 15:20; 1 Chronicles 16:5 ). 3 . A leading Levite (1 Chronicles 23:8 ). 4 . Levite in charge of treasury for God's house under David (1 Chronicles 29:8; compare 1 Chronicles 26:20-22 ). 5 . Guardian of the royal sons under David (1 Chronicles 27:32 ). 6 . Son of King Jehoshaphat slain by his brother King Jehoram when the latter ascended to the throne (2 Chronicles 21:1-4 ). 7 . Levite who helped purify the Temple under King Hezekiah (2 Chronicles 29:14 ) according to ancient Bible translations and scribal note; the written Hebrew text has Jehuel. Later, under Hezekiah possibly the same Jehiel served as an overseer in the Temple (2 Chronicles 31:13 ). 8 . A leading priest under Josiah who distributed large offerings to the priests for their Passover offerings (2 Chronicles 35:8 ). 9 . Father of man who returned with Ezra to Jerusalem from Babylon (Ezra 8:9 ). 10 . Father of man who proposed that men with foreign wives divorce them in order not to tempt others to worship foreign gods under Ezra (Ezra 10:1-4 ). 11 . Priest who agreed to divorce his foreign wife under Ezra (Ezra 10:21 ). 12 . Layman who agreed to divorce his foreign wife under Ezra (Ezra 10:26 ).
