Jeshimon

Holman Bible Dictionary

(jih sshi' mahn) Place name meaning, “desert” or “wilderness.” 1. Wilderness site near where David hid from Saul. It apparently belonged to the Ziphites, who reported David's location to Saul (1 Samuel 23:19; 1 Samuel 26:1 ). It lay somewhere between Hebron and the Dead Sea. 2. Wilderness site east of the Jordan near Pisgah and Peor used to mark the places Israel passed under Moses on the way to conquer the Promised Land (Numbers 21:20; Numbers 23:28 ). It may be another way to refer to the lower Jordan Valley. 3. The Hebrew word also appears as a common noun meaning desert (Deuteronomy 32:10; Psalm 68:7; Psalm 78:40; Psalm 106:14; Psalm 107:4; Isaiah 43:19-20 ). Some interpreters take all occurrences of the word as the common noun. See Beth-jeshimoth; Jeshimoth.
