Knead, Kneading Bowl

Holman Bible Dictionary

The process of making bread dough by mixing flour, water, and oil along with a piece of the previous day's dough with the hands in a kneading bowl or trough. The mixture was allowed to stand in the bowl to rise and ferment (Exodus 12:34 ). Kneading the dough was usually the work of the woman (Genesis 18:6; 1 Samuel 28:24 ) but was performed on occasion by men (Hosea 7:4 ). The bowls could be made of wood, earthenware, or bronze and were the objects of either God's blessing or curse (Deuteronomy 28:5 ,Deuteronomy 28:5,28:17; see Exodus 8:3 ).
