Lucius

Holman Bible Dictionary

(lyoo ci' uhss) Personal name of uncertain meaning. 1. Christian prophet and/or teacher from Cyrene who helped lead church at Antioch to set apart Saul and Barnabas for missionary service (Acts 13:1 ). Early church tradition tried, probably incorrectly, to identify him with either Luke or with 2. below. Thus an African was one of the first Christian evangelists and had an important part in the early days of the church of Antioch and in beginning the Christian world missions movement. 2. A relative of Paul who sent greetings to the church at Rome (Romans 16:21 ). He was apparently one of many Jews who adopted Greek names.
