Othniel
Holman Bible Dictionary
(ahth' nih ehl) Name meaning, “God is powerful.” 1. First of Israel's judges or deliverers. Othniel received Caleb's daughter Achsah as his wife as a reward for his capture of Kiriath-sepher (Debir) (Joshua 15:15-19; Judges 1:11-15 ). As the first judge, Othniel rescued Israel from the Mesopotamian king Cushan-rishathaim (Judges 3:7-11 ). Othniel was the only judge to come from the southern tribes. See 1 Chronicles 27:15 ).
