Holman Bible Dictionary
Open land surrounding towns and villages, regarded as common property to be freely used by village shepherds and herdsmen (Numbers 35:2 ,Numbers 35:2,35:7; Joshua 14:4; Joshua 21:11 ). The same Hebrew term designates open space around a city or the sanctuary (Ezekiel 27:28; Ezekiel 45:2; Ezekiel 48:17 ).
