Holman Bible Dictionary

(puht) Personal name and a geographic designation, perhaps derived from the Egyptian pdty meaning, “foreign bowman.” 1. Son of Ham (Genesis 10:6; 1 Chronicles 1:8 ) in “Table of Nations” and thus ancestor of inhabitants of Put. 2. Designation for a region of Africa bordering Egypt (Jeremiah 46:9; Ezekiel 27:10; Ezekiel 30:5; Ezekiel 38:5; Nahum 3:9; and, by emendation, Isaiah 66:19 ). Put is generally identified with Libya, perhaps with the city of Cyrene. All references to the men of Put involve mercenaries, that is, soldiers for hire.
