Holman Bible Dictionary
(rew' ehl) Personal name meaning, “friend of God.” 1. Son of Esau and ancestor of several Edomite clans (Genesis 36:4 ,Genesis 36:4,36:10 ,Genesis 36:10,36:13 ,Genesis 36:13,36:17; 1Chronicles 1:35,1 Chronicles 1:37 ). 2 . Exodus 2:18 identifies Reuel as the “father” of Zipporah, Moses' wife. Numbers 10:29 presents Reuel as the father of Hobab, Moses' father-in-law. Elsewhere Moses' father-in-law is called Jethro. The tradition is also divided regarding the background of Moses' father-in-law, either Midianite ( Exodus 2:16; Exodus 3:1 ) or Kenite (Judges 1:16; Judges 4:11 ). See Numbers 2:14 ). 4 . A Benjaminite (1 Chronicles 9:8 ).
