Holman Bible Dictionary

(sshay' muhr) Personal and place name meaning, “thorn” or “diamond.” 1. A Levite (1 Chronicles 24:24 ), written Shamur in some manuscripts. 2. Town in hill country of Judah assigned to tribe of Judah (Joshua 15:48 ). Located either at modern el-Bireh near khirbet Somera northeast of en-Rimmon or khirbet es-Sumara about twelve miles west-southwest of Hebron. 3. Home of Tola, the judge from the tribe of Issachar, in mount Ephraim (Judges 10:1 ). Located possibly at khirbet es-Sumara about seven miles south of Shechem. Some commentators would equate it with Samaria.
