Shaphan

Holman Bible Dictionary

(sshay' fan) Personal name meaning, “coney.” Prominent court official during King Josiah's reign in Judah (2 Kings 22:1 ). Shaphan served as scribe and treasurer. During Josiah's religious reforms and refurbishment of the Temple, Shaphan delivered the newfound book of the law (probably Deuteronomy) from Hilkiah the priest to the king's palace. He also was sent to Huldah the prophetess to confer concerning the book (2 Kings 22:14 ). Shaphan and his sons befriended Jeremiah on several occasions. See Ahikam; Elasah; Gedeliah; Jaazaniah .
