Sharuhen
Holman Bible Dictionary
(sshuh ryoo' hehn) Place name perhaps meaning, “free pasture land.” Town assigned to tribe of Simeon (Joshua 19:6 ) located in the territory of Judah (Joshua 15:32 , where spelling is Shilhim; in 1 Chronicles 4:31 spelling is Shaaraim; Egyptian spelling is apparently Shurahuna). The Hyksos withdrew there after the Egyptians defeated them about 1540 B.C. See Hyksos . The traditional location is tell el-Farah, but recent study has favored tell el-Ajjul about four miles south of Gaza, though this has often been identified as Beth Eglayim. Excavations have shown this to have been a large, well-fortified, wealthy city.
