Holman Bible Dictionary
Wheat of an inferior quality (Triticum satiuum). Egyptians made bread from it. It had not sprouted when the plagues struck Egypt (Exodus 9:32 ). Spelt illustrates the farmer's planning, placing it on the outer edge of the field to retard the intrusion of weeds (Isaiah 28:25 ). Compare Ezekiel 4:9 . See Agriculture .
