Hastings' Dictionary of the Bible

BLAIN . A blain is an inflammatory swelling on the body. In one of the plagues of Egypt the dust became a ‘boil breaking forth with blains upon man and upon beast’ ( Exodus 9:9-10 ). See Botch, Medicine, and cf. Wyclif’s tr. [Note: translate or translation.] of Job 2:7 ‘He smot Iob with the werste stinkende bleyne fro the sole of the fot unto the nol.’ The word is still retained in the compound chilblain .
