SHECANIAH . 1 . A descendant of Zeruh. ( 1 Chronicles 3:21-22 , cf. Ezra 8:3 [ 1Es 8:29 Sechenias]). 2 . Au exile who returned ( Ezra 8:5 [ 1Es 8:32 Samechenias]). 3 . Chief of the tenth course of priests ( 1 Chronicles 24:11 ). 4 . A priest ( 2 Chronicles 31:15 ). 5 . A contemporary of Ezra ( Ezra 10:2 [ 1Es 8:92 Jechonias]). 6 . The father of Shemaiah ( Nehemiah 3:29 ). It is possible that he and No. 1 are identical. 7 . The father-in-law of Tobiah the Ammonite ( Nehemiah 6:18 ). 8 . The eponym of a family which returned with Zerubbabel ( Nehemiah 12:3 ). It is the same name which, by interchange of b and k , appears as Shebaniah in Nehemiah 10:4; Nehemiah 12:14 .
