Apostles
1910 New Catholic Dictionary
(Greek: apo, off; stella, send)
Envoys, messengers, missionaries; name given especially to those first selected by Jesus. They are distinguished from the other disciples by the general power of jurisdiction and teaching. Their names are as follows (Matthew 10; Mark 3; Luke 6):
- Andrew
- Bartholomew
- James the Greater
- James the Lesser
- John
- Matthew
- Matthias (elected in place of Judas)
- Philip
- Simon Peter
- Simon
- Thaddeus or Jude
- Thomas
Though not one of the twelve Apostles, Saint Paul is numbered as an Apostle of the first rank. The name is also given to Saint Barnabas.
