Established as a mission, August 28, 1860, and as a Vicariate Apostolic, August 24, 1870, comprising 96,250 square miles; entrusted to the Society for African Missions of Lyons. Name changed to the Vicariate Apostolic of Lagos January 12, 1943. Elevated to the archdiocese of Lagos, April 18, 1950.
