Epact

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

(Greek: epi, upon; ago, lead)

Term given to the surplus days of the solar year over the year of 12 lunar months, or the moon's age in days on the first day of a year. The system of epacts is based on the Metonic Lunar Cycle, and it is employed to determine the time of the ecclesiastical new moon.
