Epigonation
1910 New Catholic Dictionary
Vestment of the Greek and Armenian rites, really proper to bishops, archimandrites, and other dignitaries, but actually worn by many priests. It is diamond-shaped, stiff with cardboard , and embroidery, and hangs from the girdle to below the right knee. It was originally only an ornamental handkerchief called the encheirion, but received its present form in the 12th century.
