Francis Gagelin, Blessed

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Martyr, born Montperreux, France, 1797; died Hue, Indo-China, 1833. He entered the Grand Seminary at Besancon in 1817, and from there went to the Seminary for Foreign Missions at Paris. In 1818 he embarked for Coohin-China, where, four years later, he became a member of the Society of Foreign Missions of Paris. Appointed vicar-general and assigned to Central Tonkin, Father Gagelin labored with the same zeal for souls he had shown in Coohin. After a decree of persecution he gave himself up at Bongson. Taken to Hue, the capital, he was put in chains and strangled to death, October 17, 1833. His remains were buried at the Christian village of Phukam, but in 1846 they were transferred to the Paris Seminary. Beatified, 1900.
