George Dowdall

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Archbishop of Armagh, born Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland, 1487; died London, England, 1558. He was prior of the monastery of Crutched Friars at Ardee at the time of its suppression, 1519, was pensioned, and became the schismatical Archbishop of Armagh. Under Queen Mary he led the Catholic party, endeavored to repair the injuries to religion, suffered during the preceding reigns, and having renounced the schism, was appointed by the pope to his original see.
