Great, Herod the
1910 New Catholic Dictionary
(73-4 B.C.) Son of Antipater, an Idumaean. He became governor of Galilee and in 40 B.C. King of Judea, by the favor of the Romans. He was barbarous, a slave to his passions, jealous, and ambitious; he put several of his own children to death and was responsible for the massacre of the Holy Innocents.
