James Northcote

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Antiquarian; born Devonshire, England, 1821; died Stoke-upon-Trent, 1907. He was Anglican curate at Ilfracombe but resigned and entered the Catholic Church, becoming editor of the "Rambler," and the "Clifton Tracts." After his wife's death he entered the priesthood and for 17 years was president of Oscott College. In addition to his valuable "Roma sotterranea," he wrote, "Mary in the Gospels" and "Celebrated Sanctuaries of the Madonna."
