Born June 7, 1811 at Bathgate, Linlithgowshire; died May 6, 1870. Professor of midwifery at the University of Edinburgh. Physician to Queen Victoria. Pioneer in Victorian medicine. Renowned for his contributions to gynecology and obstetrics. First to employ chloroform as an anesthetic in surgical operations and obstetrics.
