Entering the monastery of the Premonstratensian Canons at Steinfeld (1162) he was ordained and appointed chaplain of the Cistercian nuns at Hoven. He soon became known by the name of Joseph, which the Blessed Virgin, calling him her chaplain and spouse, bestowed on him.
