His father was Bela I and upon the death of his brother, Geisa I, the nobles chose Ladislaus to succeed him rather than Solomon, the son of Andrew I. He enlarged his kingdom by the conquest of Croatia and Dalmatia and expelled the Huns, Poles, Tatars, and Russians, making Christianity the national religion.
