1910 New Catholic Dictionary
Geologist. Born 1791; died 1875. Renowned as the exponent of uniformitarianism as opposed to the catastrophic theory of geology. Did distinguished research on marine Tertiary strata of Italy. Initiated the use of the terms Eocene, Miocene, and Pliocene, and was the author of the classic "Principles of Geology."
