French physiologist, the founder of experimental brain science and a pioneer in anesthesia. Born April 15, 1794 at Maureilhan, Hérault, France; died December 6, 1867. Made notable contributions to the physiological theory of sensations. Did research on the peculiar functions of specific parts of the brain.
