Omophorion

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Vestment of the Greek Rite, corresponding to the pallium of the Western Church but worn by bishops as well as archbishops. It is a broad band ornamented with crosses and draped loosely over neck, shoulders, and breast. Probably derived from the civilomophorion, a shawl in general use that existed in the time of Isidore of Pelusium, c.400,when it was made of wool and symbolical of the duties of bishops as shepherds of their flocks.
