1910 New Catholic Dictionary

(Latin: quadraginta, forty)

A rigorous fast of 40 days according to the prescriptions of the ancient Church. Water, bread, and salt once a day was the only nourishment permitted. The indulgence of quarantines means the remission of so much temporal punishment due to sin, as would equal 40 days of such rigorous penance.
