Saint Patrick's Breastplate

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

A beautiful prayer composed by Saint Patrick and universally accepted as genuine. It was written in preparation for the saint's appearance at Tara before the assembled chieftains of Ireland on Easter Sunday, 433, when the final blow was given to Druidism, and the triumph of Christianity completed.

Christ shield me this day:

Christ with me,

Christ before me,

Christ behind me,

Christ in me,

Christ beneath me,

Christ above me,

Christ on my right,

Christ on my left,

Christ when I lie down,

Christ when I arise,

Christ in the heart of every person who thinks of me,

Christ in every eye that sees me,

Christ in the ear that hears me.
