1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Seaport in County Sligo on the Garvogue River, containing the ruins of a Dominican abbey, the cathedral for the diocese of Elphin, and the College of the Immaculate Conception. In early times it was a walled town with a castle for protection (1242). In 1641 it was taken by the Parliamentary forces, and afterwards occupied by the Royalists.
