1911 Encyclopedia Britannica

(Fr. esponton, Ital. spontone, from Lat. punctum, point, pungere, to prick), a weapon carried by infantry officers in the 17th and early 18th centuries. It was a type of the partisan or halberd (q.v.), a shafted weapon with a special form of spear head.
