Ahrweiler

1911 Encyclopedia Britannica

a town of Germany, in the Prussian Rhine province, on the river Ahr and the Remagen-Adenau line of railway. Pop. 5000. It is a town of medieval aspect and is surrounded by ancient walls, with battlements and four gates in good repair. There is a Gothic church (dating from 1245).

A convent school of the Ursuline nuns is a prominent feature on a hill to the south. The trade is almost exclusively confined to the manufacture and export of the wines of the district.
