Bowline

1911 Encyclopedia Britannica

(a word found in most Teutonic languages, probably connected with the "bow" of a ship), a nautical term for a rope leading from the edge of a sail to the bows, for the purpose of steadying the sail when sailing close to the wind - "on a bowline."
